Biographical / Historical
Mary Jane Wharton Sockwell was born in Guilford County on March 30, 1910, to William Gilmer Wharton and Annie McKnight Wharton. Sockwell graduated from , now UNC Greensboro, in 1931.
She graduated with a B.A. in Biology from the North Carolina College for Women (now UNC Greensboro) in 1931. Sockwell was president of the Student Government Association, Everlasting Class President and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating from NCCW, Sockwell earned her Ph.D. in Zoology from Yale University. For several years, Sockwell taught Biology and Chemistry at The Brearley School in New York City.
In 1948, she married John E. Sockwell of Greensboro. Sockwell was a member of First Presbyterian Church, UNCG Alumni Association, the Green Thumb Garden Club and the Friday Club.
She died on March 12, 2007 and is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Greensboro, North Carolina.
