Abstract Mary Jane Wharton Sockwell was born in Guilford County on March 30, 1910, to William Gilmer Wharton and Annie McKnight Wharton. Sockwell graduated from , now UNC Greensboro, in 1931. She graduated with a B.A. in Biology from the North Carolina College for Women (now UNC Greensboro) in 1931.
