Scope and Contents

This collection contains three manuscript wartime letters, 1862-1864, written to Jerusha A. Sawyer by grateful soliders who served alongside or were treated by her. Also, a post-war Department of the Interior Pension Award certificate, an original that includes receipt stamp by the U.S. Pension Agent at Boston, Massachusetts, dated 1894 January 20. The third letter, written on 1864 February 13, by Colonel Louis Bell from the 4th Regiment Head Quarters at Beaufort, South Carolina. The letter welcomes Sawyer back to the regiment on behalf of his officers and men alike, along with notifing her that as Hospital Matrol she is entitled to a pass on the Government transport.

Biographical Note

Jerusha A. Sawyer was a U.S. Army Nurse and Army Hospital Matron and regarded with high esteem from the 4th Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteer soliders she had treated them. Two of the soliders thank nurse Sawyer in glowing terms for her work with wounded soliders of specificed companies, enclosing cash gifts gathered from the men of these companies. This cash gift is not included in this collection.

The letters were purchased from American Historical Manuscripts on 2004 November 15.
