Abstract

Annie E. Johns (1831-1889) served as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War, and earned the honorific nickname, "The Florence Nightingale of the South." She later wrote about her wartime experiences.

Scope and Contents This collection contains three manuscript wartime letters, 1862-1864, written to Jerusha A. Sawyer by grateful soliders who served alongside or were treated by her. Also, a post-war Department of the Interior Pension Award certificate, an original that includes receipt stamp by the U.S. Pension Agent at Boston, Massachusetts, dated 1894 January 20.
