Abstract

Claudette Burroughs-White, born Treva Claudette Graves, was a Greensboro city councilwoman from 1995 until 2004. She had previously served as a probation officer and supervisor in Guilford County's domestic and juvenile courts. An alumna of Woman's College, Burroughs-White began her studies in 1957, the second year that African-American women were admitted as students, and graduated in the class of 1961. As a student, she participated in the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins at Woolworth's. Throughout her life she was active in speaking, preservation, and education endeavors memorializing the history of the sit-ins. The Claudette Burroughs-White papers contain materials from her time on the city council and in the courts, documenting events and organizations in Greensboro and Guilford County during that time. Also included are select materials from her time at Woman's College and her personal history.
