This collection contains official records that reflect the history and activities of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1907-2015. These records contain materials related to classes, the history of the school, the internal organization and management of the department, and students. The files include annual reports, memorandums, an archive of the department's website, and self-studies of the program done as part of the accreditation process.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Mathematics Department has been in existence at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro since its founding as the State Normal and Industrial School in 1891. Its first department head was one of the charter members of the faculty, Gertrude Mendenhall. The department began to transform in 1965 with the addition of new classes in applied mathematics. Statistics courses were also introduced around that time. In 1967 and 1968 the Department attained master's degree programs.

In the 1980's, the discipline of computer sciences was added to the Mathematics Department. By 1993, the Department included three disciplines: mathematics, computer science, and statistics. In 2006, the Mathematics Department was divided into two departments, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Computer Sciences.

Arrangement Note

Although the collection was generally in a useable original order when it arrived, the arrangement scheme for this collection was modified during processing to aid in ease of conducting research. This collection is arranged into three series with Series 1 and Series 2 arranged in alphabetical order while Series 3 is arranged in chronological order. Series 1: General Files, 1907-2015 Series 2: Memorandums, 1963-2003 Series 3: Annual Reports, 1970-1997
