Singletary describes his Carnegie Foundation tour, his relationship with Consolidated University of North Carolina System President William Friday and circumstances surrounding his arrival at Woman's College. He describes the Consolidated University of North Carolina System, the role played by the three major universities and governance by the one-hundred member board. He recalls the tenure of William Friday, his relationship with faculty and students and the emphasis placed on teaching versus research. He describes his relationship with Mereb Mossman, his two years in creating the Job Corps, the beginning of coeducation at UNCG and factors affecting his decision to leave. Biographical Note
Otis Singletary (1921-2003) served as chancellor of the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina and later for The University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) from 1961-1966. He took a two-year leave of absence to create the Job Corps in Washington, DC, from 1964-1966.
