Scope and Contents

Kupferer recalls her student days at Woman's College including the restrictions of life on campus, the social activities and the effect of World War II on campus. She describes the facilities, assemblies and chapels and the May Day celebration. She discusses changes after her return such as coeducation, a move toward more faculty with PhDs and the separation of the sociology and anthropology departments. She recalls the administrations of Chancellors Otis Singletary and James Ferguson and Vice Chancellor Mereb Mossman. Subjects: Attitudes toward blacks (e.g. dorm maids), life on campus being more liberal than other colleges, going to town, dress code, merchants, townspeople's treatment of Woman's College students, makeup of student body, faculty/student relations, Woman's Dorm and concerts, sports, going to Chapel, May Day, presence of GIs on campus during WWII, coming before the judicial board for illegal "flying," Chancellor Jackson, Harriet Elliott, Chancellor Graham Controversy, factions sitting opposite each other in Home Economics cafeteria, makeup of faculty, going coed, problems of first male students, Chancellor Singletary, underfunding of the university, Chancellor Ferguson, Mereb Mossman, administration.

Biographical Note

Harriett J. Kupferer (1922-2006) completed her undergraduate degree in physical education at Woman's College of the University of North Carolina in 1943. She returned to the school in 1961 and taught in the Department of Anthropology until her retirement in 1984 from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, serving as the first department chair from 1974-1984.
