Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This Collection contains the personal and official papers of the Deans of the School of Music, Wade R. Brown, Henry Hugh Altvater, Lawrence E. Hart, Lee Rigsby, and Robert L. Blocker. Official correspondence ranges scattered years from 1912-1986. They outline plans that the Deans had for the School of Music and also business transactions and personal correspondence. Brown's papers give information about his various functions and duties as Dean of the School of Music, Director of the North Carolina High School Music Contest, Head of the Woman's College Concert Series, Choirmaster at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and President of the Greensboro Civic Music Association. They also provide information concerning the development of the State Music Contest during its early years and during the depression, the development of the school and its relationship to the rest of the college and the arrangement of musical events on campus and throughout the community. While abroad for the summer, his secretary wrote letters to keep him informed about campus life. There is personal correspondence from family members and about his summer travels and his association with religious and civic organizations. There are references to the political situation of World War I and World War II as well as an essay by Brown on the Jewish contribution to Western culture (1935). The correspondence of Altvater during the first three years of his service as Dean of the School of Music (1936-1939) is mostly official correspondence and memoranda. It provides a very good picture of the School of Music, including his plans for the school and his relationship to former Dean Wade R. Brown. Included are the files of Dr. Hart as head of the North Carolina concerts for the Kennedy Center bicentennial project. Also included is an archive of the department's website from 2015.
