Biographical / Historical

The first meeting of the North Carolina Speech Association was held on March 18, 1950 in the Branson Building at Duke University. The purpose of the meeting was to form a state organization from the parent organization of the Southern Speech Association. This request orginated from Ken Reardon of Duke University who made a motion for the creation of a North Carolina Speech Association.

The Constitutiona and By-laws for the North Carolina Speech Association were adopted during a meeting on May 6th, 1950.

The purpose of this organization as stated in the original 1950 Constitution was "...to promote speech training and activity in North Carolina and to provide for the professional interests and advancements of its members."

Sometime around the late 1960s to 1971 is when the organization made the decision to also incorporate the theatre arts into its focus as well as to update its name to the North Carolina Speech and Drama Association.
