Biographical / Historical

Ellen Griffin (1918-1986), was an educator, author, renowned golf instructor, and advocate for women in sports. Griffin received her B.S. in Physical Education from Woman's College (now UNCG) in 1940 and her M.A. from UNC Chapel Hill in 1943. Griffin was a faculty member at Woman's College (later UNCG) from 1940 to 1968. She coauthored Golf Manual for Teachers with Betty Hicks in 1947. Griffin taught at UNCG for 28 years, with the exception of a two-year leave of absence to serve as an education consultant for the National Golf Foundation in the early 1960s. Griffin left UNCG in 1968 to found her own golf teaching facility near Greensboro known as The Farm. Among her many contributions to the field of women's golf, Griffin helped found the Women's Professional Golf Association in the late 1940s. The organization ended due to a lack of funding after the war. A few years later, successors founded the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). Griffin was awarded LPGA Teacher of the Year in 1962, instructed numerous golf instructors, and helped improve the stroke of numerous professional golf players. Her students and colleagues noted her positivity and sense of humor as well as that she was not just an instructor of golf but also of life.
