Biographical / Historical

Rachel Brower Twiddy (1917-2010), of Liberty, North Carolina, served in the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) at Ford Ord, California, from 1942 until the fall of 1943. Rachel H. Brower Twiddy was born on 27 July 1917. She grew up in Liberty, North Carolina, and graduated from Liberty High School in 1935. She went to Emergency Hospital and Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, for three years of nursing school. Twiddy worked for one year in a Washington hospital, then spent several years in private duty nursing.

In 1941, she moved to San Francisco, California, and worked at Stanford Hospital. Twiddy joined the Army Nurse Corps as a second lieutenant, and in February 1942, she was sent to Fort Ord, California, where she worked in the skin ward. She married Charles Twiddy, an army warrant officer, in April 1943 and was discharged from the Army Nurse Corps that fall, after becoming pregnant. The Twiddys lived in California until 1945, when they settled in Raleigh, North Carolina. Charles went back into the army a few years later, and the family moved to Texas, Hawaii, and Maryland.

Around 1950, he took a civilian job at the Pentagon, and Rachel occasionally worked as a nurse while they lived in Washington, D.C. The Twiddys moved back to Liberty in 1984. Rachel Brower Twiddy died on 19 February, 2010.
