Biographical / Historical

Jean Wrenn Higgins (1919-2012) of Siler City, North Carolina, served stateside in the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services) from 1943 to 1945. Jean Kathryn Wrenn Higgins of Siler City, North Carolina, graduated from Siler City High School in 1936, and then attended Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). Following graduation in 1940, she taught history and English in Chatham County, North Carolina.

Higgins joined the WAVES in 1943. She was sworn in in Raleigh and then sent to Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts in September 1943. Higgins's first assignment was at a naval air station in Weeksville, North Carolina, where she briefly supervised enlisted WAVES before being transferred to Glynco, Georgia. There she did more personnel work and also served as an aide to the commanding officer until 1945, when she married and was discharged.

After World War II, Higgins and her husband, Victor, moved to Washington, D.C., to await her husband's discharge from Bethesda Naval Hospital. After the birth of her four children and the death of her husband, Higgins returned to teaching. She taught at a school in Georgia before returning to live in Siler City. In 1987 she moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Higgins died 21 October, 2012.

Offensive Language Statement

The UNC Greensboro University Libraries collects, preserves, and makes accessible unique and historical materials for learning and research. The nature of historical materials is such that some material may represent positions, norms, and values that are offensive and objectionable. These materials represent the opinions and actions of their creators. By providing access to these records in our reading room and through our digital collections, we recognize that archives and rare books can play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and in helping us learn from the past.

Our finding aids and other collection descriptions may occasionally re-use language provided by creators or former holders of the materials, but we strive to place outdated or offensive terminology in context. That said, we recognize that we may not always make the right decision and welcome feedback from all sources so we can learn and adjust our practices. Please contact us at scua@uncg.edu if you encounter problematic language in our finding aids or other collection description. We will review the language and, as appropriate, update it in a way that balances preservation of the original context with our ongoing commitment to describing materials with respectful and inclusive language.
