Biographical / Historical
Pauline G. Palmer (1901-1952) was born in Meriden, Connecticut, and was living in East Orange, New Jersey, when she received word she had been selected as a new officer during World War II. Palmer was in her early 40's and had been working as a music teacher in the area.
Pauline Palmer was one of 47 women sworn in as the first officer candidates in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps on July 9, 1942. Initially, 3,515 applicats had applied and Palmer was one of very few selected. 16 letters of correspondence with her son, Covert, expressing daily life being thrust into training.
Palmer died in a car accident in December 1952, which is discussed at length in many of the letters in this collection. These discuss the accident, her death, and matters of her estate.
