Scope and Contents

The Marjorie "Marge" Burns Papers date from the 1920's to 2009 and includes personal papers, newspapers, correspondence, photographs, and other manuscripts relating to the life and career of Women's College alumna and famed golf player and instructor, Marjorie "Marge" Burns and her father, Frank Burns.

A significant portion of these papers are newspaper clippings and copies regarding Marge Burn's accomplishments as a competitive golfer. This includes everything from awards she has won, halls of fame she has entered, specific matches she has competed in, and biographical information about her. Also included are many photographs of Marge Burns and events she has attended, as well as personal papers related to her father, Frank Burns. Frank Burns was a member of a Rotary Club and worked in movie theaters during the 1920s, aspects of his life he kept records of. The papers included here cover some of Frank Burns' life around the time Marjorie was born until Marjorie's death in 2009.

Biographical or Historical Information

Marjorie "Marge" Burns (1925-2009) was a Woman's College alumna and award winning golf player and instructor.

Burns started playing golf at a young age, with support from her father, Frank Burns. She had a successful amateur career, winning the North Carolina Amateur Championship a record ten times, and the Teague Award five times. Later in life, Marge Burns utilized her athletic skills and knowledge to become a golf instructor, allowing her to impart some of her wisdom to a new generation. Burns was included in multiple halls of fame, including the UNCG sports hall of fame, and was given the UNCG Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991. She was as an exceptional instructor and iconic athlete.
