Biographical / Historical

Dr. Hyman Rodman is a former Professor in the Department of Child Development and Family Relations at UNC Greensboro. In 1952, he received a B.A. followed by an M.A. in 1953, both from McGill University where he also met his wife, Barbara Mahase Rodman (1927-2019). The Rodmans had three children, two sons and a one daughter. They began their married life in Boston, MA where Dr. Rodman earned a PhD in 1957 at nearby Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. As a sociologist, Dr. Rodman served as director of the Merrill Palmer Institute and later as the director of the Family Research Center at UNC Greensboro. His research interests included lower class family organization and values, self-care (latchkey) children, adolescent rights, and abortion rights.
