This collection contains correspondence from Linda Flowers to U.T. and Joe Summers. Dr. Flowers met the Summers family during her time as a student at the University of Rochester. She was a student of Dr. Summers and eventually rented a room in U.T. and Joe Summers' house. Also included is biographical material.

Biographical / Historical
Linda Flowers (November 8, 1944-January 21, 2000) was the daughter of tenant farmers in Duplin County, North Carolina, and became professor of English at North Carolina Wesleyan College (NCWC) in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Flowers received an undergraduate degree from UNC Greensboro as well as an MA from Ohio State University and an MA and PhD from the University of Rochester. Flowers was on the executive committee of the North Carolina Humanities Council as well as serving as chair of the English Department at NCWC, faculty chair, and overseeing the Visiting Writers' Series. In 1993, Flowers' book Throwed Away: Failures of Progress in Eastern North Carolina was published and received critical acclaim.
