Biographical / Historical

The Woman's State Relief Corps (WRC) was a charitable women's auxiliary organization created to support the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in 1883. The GAR was an organization for veterans, and their descendants, of the Union Army after the Civil War. The WRC was the only Allied Order open to women who do not have an hereditary ancestor who would have been eligible for the GAR. Among the duties of the WRC were to assist the GAR, promote and organize Memorial Day celebrations, and promote patriotic education. WRC No. 45 was based in Chesterville, Maine.
