George Bernard Shaw Page Proof

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 0410

Content Description

This collection contains a single page proof from What I Really Wrote About the War, a book of essays written by George Bernard Shaw. Shaw has corrected the page proof, altering the reading "...I regard the Tsar as a monarch whose views differ deeply from President Wilson's..." to "....I regard the Tsar as a gentleman whose views are not those of President Wilson..." He made the revision both in-place with the text and as a rewritten line in the lower margin.

Biographical / Historical

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an Irish playright, critic, and political activist. He wrote more than sixty plays and was considered the leading dramatist of his generation. Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925. In 1938, he wrote the screenplay for a film version of his play Pygmalion, which earned him an Academy Award. Despite the critical acclaim, Shaw was considered to hold controversial views, such as promoting eugenics and being opposed to vaccination. Likewise, he unpopularly denounced both sides in WWI as being equally culpable for the war.

Offensive Language Statement

The UNC Greensboro University Libraries collects, preserves, and makes accessible unique and historical materials for learning and research. The nature of historical materials is such that some material may represent positions, norms, and values that are offensive and objectionable. These materials represent the opinions and actions of their creators. By providing access to these records in our reading room and through our digital collections, we recognize that archives and rare books can play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and in helping us learn from the past.

Our finding aids and other collection descriptions may occasionally re-use language provided by creators or former holders of the materials, but we strive to place outdated or offensive terminology in context. That said, we recognize that we may not always make the right decision and welcome feedback from all sources so we can learn and adjust our practices. Please contact us at scua@uncg.edu if you encounter problematic language in our finding aids or other collection description. We will review the language and, as appropriate, update it in a way that balances preservation of the original context with our ongoing commitment to describing materials with respectful and inclusive language.
