Biographical / Historical

Herman Middleton was born on March 24th, 1925 and just recently passed away on April 12th, 2020 at the age of 95. Middleton received his BS and MA from Columbia University, and later earned his Ph.D from University of Florida. Herman eventually made his way to Greensboro's Women’s College in 1956. In addition to receiving his education, Herman served in the US Navy. Middleton entered the Navy, due to the start of WWII, after his first year of College which he spent at Rollins University in Florida. However, after serving in the Navy for 3 years, he returned to his education, knowing now that he wanted to focus on theatre, which led him to Columbia University. While he had formally left the Navy, his connection to the Military would come back around later in life, while serving as a professor at UNCG. Middleton took 11 select Women College students on tour to various US Military Bases around the world, performing various plays such as “The Pajama Game.” Herman Middleton also helped make various changes in education at UNCG in the Drama and Speech departments. In addition to making an impact in UNCG’s theatre department, he influenced theatre in North Carolina by helping found a children’s theatre group known as the Pixie Playhouse (now the N.C. Theatre for Young People).
