Included in this collection are a 2015 oral history interview, military papers, correspondence, photographs, artifacts, and uniforms. Much of the material in the collection focuses on her time in Meridian, Mississippi and Sasebo, Japan.

Biographical or Historical Information

Sally Ann Weeks Benson was born 26 January 1947, in Aiken, South Carolina. She attended The University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 1965-1969 where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics with a Clothing major. Benson was a division sales manager at Hudson Belk before joining the United States Navy in 1981.

She was commissioned into the United States Navy as an Ensign in July 1981 and served until August 2002. She retired with the rank of Commander.

Benson served at many duty stations during her career. She attended officer training at the Naval Education and Training Center in Newport, Rhode Island from 1981-1984. She was stationed at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut from 1985-1986; Naval Station Treasure Island near Oakland, California from 1986-89; Bureau of Naval Personnel, Navy Annex, Arlington, Virginia from 1989-1992, and Naval Air Station Alameda in Alameda, California from 1992-1994. Benson served as Commander, Fleet Activities in Sasebo, Japan from 1994-1996, and then attended the Army Command General College in Leavenworth, Kansas from June 1996-June 1997. Afterwards she served with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. from 1997-2000, and as Commander for the Naval Technical Training Center in Meridian, Mississippi from 2000-2002. Benson retired in May 2002 to Coats, North Carolina with her husband Eric Benson.

Items are arranged chronologically and then geographically based on Benson's original order. The collection is made up of nine series: 1. Papers; 2. Photographs; 3. Scrapbooks; 4. Postcards; 5.
