Scope and Contents

The Jean Farley Manuscripts feature an original typescript with handwritten corrections and revisions for Farley's book of poems, Figure and Field (University of North Carolina Press, 1970). The collection also contains a number of poems in manuscript form, including a draft of "At Bay", a poem dedicated to the memory of acclaimed poet and Woman's College professor Randall Jarrell (1914-1965).

Biographical or Historical Information

Poet Jean Farley (1928-1974) graduated with a major in English from the Woman's College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) in 1950. Farley resided in Ohio after graduating from Woman's College. Farley's husband, Ellington White, served as an editor for the Kenyon Review, and Farley contributed several poems to that publication. Her poetry has appeared in major literary journals and has been widely anthologized.

This collection includes draft copies of Farley's book of poems, Figure and Field, and a number of additional poems.
