Scope and Contents

This collection contains the official records that reflect the functions and activities of the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management of the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business from 1973 to 2002.

These records contain annual reports which were prepared yearly by the head of the Department and general files including a proposal for new programs and a self evaluation report.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Department of Information Systems and Operations Management was originally founded as the Department of Business and Distributive Education in 1972 when the School was reorganized into four departments. James W. Crews was appointed head of the Department of Business and Distributive Education in 1973.

In 1977, the Department hosted the 36th Annual Business Education Conference which was attended by approximately 200 business teacher and graduate and undergraduate students in business education. In the Fall of 1979, the Department relocated its offices and classrooms from the Forney Building to the newly completed Bryan School of Business and Economics Building.

In 1982, the Department of Business and Distributive Education changed its name to the Department of Business Information and Support Systems to more accurately reflect the primary areas of concentration in the department. Gerald L. Hershey was named acting head of the Department after James Crew stepped down after being in the position for nine years.

In 1983, James W. Crew accepted the position of head of the Department of Business Information and Support Systems after a brief retirement from the position. He agreed to serve through 1985 to assist the department. In 1986, the department changed name once again to the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management following a school wide reorganization of departments. Gerald L. Hershey was named head of the Department.

In 1986, the Triad Information Systems Executives' Council (TISEC) was formalized and recruitment of participants for fee resulted in commitments from 12 firms.

In 1987, Richard A. Ehrhardt was named to head of the Department.

In 1991, Gerald L. Hershey was named head of the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management.

In 1995, the Department began work on designing a Master's program in Information Technology and Management. In 1996, it was approved by the Chancellor and submitted to the General Administration for final approval. On May 24, 1997, the Department received approval to offer a Master's degree in Information Technology and Management.

In 2000, the Journal of Global Information Technology Management became an official publication of the Bryan school and was housed in the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management. Prshant Palvia was named head of the Department in 2000.

The Department of Information Systems and Operations Management of the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics was founded in 1972. It is responsible for the University's undergraduate and graduate curricula in systems and operation management.

The records of Department of Information Systems and Operations Management contains general files and annual reports which document the activities of the Department from 1973-2002.

The arrangement scheme for this collection was imposed during processing in the absence of a useable original order. This collection is arranged into one series arranged alphabetically.
