Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs Records

 Collection
Identifier: UA 0040.0001

Scope and Contents

These records came from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs. Over the years this office has been concerned with the fiscal (budget preparation, expenditures, and audits) and the operational management of the campus. The various departments that reported to the Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs include Accounting, Business Office, Campus Security, Dining Hall, Personnel, Physical Plant, and auxiliary operations such as the Soda Shop and University Bookstore. The Physical Plant (originally the Department of Buildings and Grounds) covered landscaping, renovations to existing buildings, janitorial service, the laundry, and motor pool as well as other practical functions necessary to the "physical" running or upkeep of the campus.

In addition to records concerning the day-to-day operation of the campus, some files contain information about the issues faced not only by the school but by society as a whole. For example, the Pine Needles file contains depression-era correspondence. Of particular note are the pleas for payment made by the printer to the Woman's College in 1933 during the "banking holiday" when banks restricted fund withdrawals. The files of the 1960's and early 1970's reflect problems faced during those years. An example of this can be found in the Upward Bound folder that contains correspondence concerning UNCG's participation in this program and the negative impact on the campus.

Other issues faced by the growing school include the debate over air conditioning, complaints from students about the food service, disturbances or threat of disturbances on campus, and the growing parking dilemma.

Unprocessed materials date from 1944 to 2010.
