Scope and Contents

The materials comprising this record group are the newsletters published by the Department of Campus Recreation. The newsletters titled, "Poop to the Group", "Rec Rap", and "Campus RECord" cover a variety of topics related to recreation activities on campus including schedules, events, announcements, results of intramural sports, and frequently include a column from the director. Years covered are 1980 through 2007, with the exception of a portion of the 1992/1993 school year. There are also annual reports, an archive of the department's website, and other documents from the department. There is also a signficant amount of photographs related to the department's activities.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Office of Recreation was created by the University in the 1970s to sponsor intramural and club sports events as well as to provide other informal recreational opportunities and programs for students and faculty at the University. By 1972, intramural sports at UNCG included basketball, billiards, bowling, football, golf, softball, tennis, table tennis, and volleyball. Their main goal was to maintain student participation and encourage engagement in recreational activities on Campus from sports in the Gym to Piney Lake. In 1995, the Office of Campus Recreation became the Department of Campus Recreation. By 2017, the Office has managed over 10,000 students as they engaged in badminton, basketball, battle canoes, flag football, floor hockey, indoor and sand volleyball, racquetball, soccer, table tennis, and even e-sports. As of 2023, it is known as the Department of Recreation and Wellness. It fosters comprehensive wellness by engaging students and the UNCG community in experiential and educational opportunities. They believe a balance of social, mental and physical wellness creates a foundation for successful, healthy individuals.

The Department of Campus Recreation is responsible for the many programs and facilities on campus related to recreation, healthy living, and fostering student development.

The records gathered here are the newsletters, photographs, annual reports, an archive of the department's website, and other documents of the department covering the period of 1970-2023.

Arrangement Note

The arrangement scheme for this collection was imposed during processing in the absence of a useable original order. This collection is arranged into two series: General files and Photographs. General files have been arranged alphabetically and photographs were grouped in the order they orginally were received.
