Biographical / Historical

Lucy Slade Libby (b. 1921) of Danville, Virginia, served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1942 to 1946. Lucy Slade Libby was born in Danville, Virginia, and raised on a tobacco farm in Blanch, North Carolina. After graduating from the Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, North Carolina, Slade attended the Duke School of Nursing from 1939-1942."

Libby joined the Army Nurse Corps in October 1942 as a second lieutenant and reported to a general hospital at Camp Davis in Wilmington, North Carolina. She remained there through March of 1944, when she was sent briefly to Camp Forrest, Tennessee, and then to Camp Blanding, Florida, to prepare for overseas duty.

She served as a nurse supervisor with the 369th and 176th station hospitals in Saipan from September 1944 to the fall of 1945, when she became assistant chief nurse of the 204th general hospital in Guam. Libby returned to the United States early the next year and was discharged with the rank of captain in October 1946. She married Edwin Clark Libby after the war.
