Biographical / Historical

Alice C. Boehret (1919-2008) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1942 until 1946. She later taught at Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina Greensboro), serving as chair of the Department of Nursing from 1960 to 1966.

Alice Crowther Boehret was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 2, 1919, and grew up in Philadelphia and Wildwood, New Jersey. Boehret graduated Germantown High School in 1937, then entered nursing training at Jefferson Medical College Hospital School of Nursing. She finished in 1941 and worked as a graduate nurse until she passed the state boards in 1942.

In early 1942, Boehret joined the Army Nurse Corps and was sent to Fort Story, Virginia, where she pent two years in the station hospital. In February 1944, she was transferred briefly to the 74th General Hospital at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and then to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, where the 74th embarked for England aboard the RMS Queen Mary. Boehret became sick during the voyage and spent her first few weeks in England hospitalized. In May she joined the 74th in Hoylake and later in Wraxhall, where a hospital had been set up in Tyntesfield Park. In June 1945, Boehret went with the unit to France, where she remained until November 1945 when she returned to Camp Butler, Pennsylvania.

Boehret was discharged as a first lieutenant in May 1946. Boehret attended the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina Greensboro) on the GI Bill and received a bachelor's degree in French in 1950. She returned to Philadelphia to teach at Albert Einstein Hospital.

In 1957, Boehret accepted a position at the Woman's College in the newly formed Deparment of Nursing; she became chairman of the department in 1960. Boehret left the school in 1966 to pursue a doctorate degree in nursing at Columbia University, from which she graduated in 1972. She then helped establish the baccalaureate nursing program at Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey. Boehret retired from Rutgers in 1984. She died 20 November, 2008.
