Biographical Note

Lois Betlach Filewood (1910-2004), of Minneapolis, Minnesota, served in the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) from 1944-1949. She received her basic training at Hunter College, New York and was then stationed at United States Naval Barracks in Washington, D.C. She was a chaplain assistant. In 1948, she married and in 1949 Filewood transferred to the Naval Reserves. Her husband was in the Navy and Filewood went with him to his duty stations to Guam; The Philippines; Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan; Astoria, Oregon, San Diego, California; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and Salem, Oregon. In 1961, when she was in Astoria, Oregon, Filewood transferred to the Active Reserves Filewood retired from the Navy in May of 1973. She died in Salem in 2004.
