Biographical / Historical

Chief Warrant Officer Christine M. Knott (b. 1949) served as an interrogator in the United States Army from 1983-2004. Christine Knott was born in 1949 in Jacksonville, Florida, and grew up in a military family, spending time in various locations in the United States and five years in Tripoli, Libya, when her father was stationed there.

At the age of 34, in 1984, Knott enlisted in the United States Army. She completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and then went to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, where she received training as a Spanish-language interrogator. Shortly after completing training, Knott deployed to Panama.

After returning from Panama, Knott was assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where she was encouraged to become a warrant officer. Having successfully completed warrant officer school, Knott returned to the Defense Language Institute for training in the Russian language. Knott was then assigned to Fort Ord,California and also to Fort Huachuca, Arizona on a temporary duty assignment.

Returning to Fort Bragg after her Fort Ord assignment, Knott deployed to Haiti as part of Operation Uphold Freedom, which took place from 1994 through 1995. Her next assignment, from 1996 to 2000, was to Frankfurt, Germany, also spending time in Bosnia, Hungary, and England.

Knott retired as a Chief Warrant Officer, Four (CW4) in 2004 due to family matters. Her position was civilianized at the same time, and as of August 2010, she continues to work in that position at Fort Bragg as a civilian.

The nature of historical materials is such that some material may represent positions, norms, and values that are offensive and objectionable. These materials represent the opinions and actions of their creators. By providing access to these records in our reading room and through our digital collections, we recognize that archives and rare books can play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and in helping us learn from the past.

Our finding aids and other collection descriptions may occasionally re-use language provided by creators or former holders of the materials, but we strive to place outdated or offensive terminology in context. That said, we recognize that we may not always make the right decision and welcome feedback from all sources so we can learn and adjust our practices. Please contact us at scua@uncg.edu if you encounter problematic language in our finding aids or other collection description.
