The collection includes an oral history transcript, 16 January 2002; various photographs of Murphy's Women's Marine Corps service, circa 1943-1945; "Let me Fight: Women's Marine Corps Reserve stamps; Buccaneer newsletter, 11 January 1945; photocopy of the Atlanta Journal front page with the United States Marine Corps cover dated June 29, 1943; official military paperwork with Adelaide's promotional rank, 1945; copy of "The Word for personal Reporting Aboard Beachland WR Barracks" detailing schedule and expectations for enlisted members aboard the Naval Air Station; Copy of the Buaer News dated July 1943; flight training information; Copy of Honarable Discharge paperwork, dated 1946. Artifact Box 2- 2 marine corps hat emblems large and small sizes; both brass dress EGA emblem. Tex box- olive green cotton twill Bell Crown hat with gold capcord; matching hat in bright forest green color with a red cord.

Biographical / Historical

Adelaide Cotter Murphy (1921-2005) of Boston, Massachusetts, served in the Woman Marines as a pilot Link trainer from 1943 to 1945. Adelaide Murphy was born 29 August 1921 in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1939, and then attended nearby Lesley College for teacher training.

Murphy joined the Woman Marines in early 1943 and was sent to Hunter College in New York for basic training. Following basic training, she was sent to Atlanta, Georgia, for LITIS (Link Instrument Training Instructors School). She was then stationed at Cherry Point, North Carolina, in mid-1943 to be a Link Trainer. She was transferred to nearby Bogue, North Carolina, and was in charge of the Link department. In 1944, Murphy was transferred to Vero Beach, Florida, to do more advanced Link training.

She was discharged from the Marines in fall 1945. Murphy married in November 1945 and stayed with her husband at Vero Beach until his discharge. They then moved to Asheville for a year, followed by Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1947. They had three children. Adelaide Murphy died on 29 May 2005.
