Biographical / Historical

Ruth Brown (1935-2019), of Jasonville, Indiana, served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) from 1953 to 1955 and 1960 to 1963.

Ruth Brown was born in Robinson, Illinois, and raised in Jasonville, Indiana. After graduation from high school in 1953, Brown enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and reported for basic training at Fort Lee, Virginia. She was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for training and then sent to Fort Benning, Georgia, for additional medical technician training. She was then stationed at Letterman Army Medical Center in Presidio, California. In December of 1955, she was discharged from the WAC when she became pregnant.

After divorcing her husband, Brown reenlisted in the WAC in 1960. She was stationed at Munson Army Medical Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and then sent to the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1961. She married a soldier who was a former patient in September of 1962 and both were discharged in June 1963. The couple settled in North Carolina after leaving the military.
