Biographical / Historical

Heather Johnson Brott (b. 1967), of Enumclaw, Washington, served in the United States Navy from 1986-1987, the United States Navy Reserve from 1987-1992 and the United States Army 1996-2008. Heather Johnson Brott was born in Enumclaw, Washington on December 11th, 1967 and grew up in western Washington and then Illinois. After graduating from high school, she enlisted in the United States Navy in February of 1986.

She attended basic training in Orlando, Florida, and was then assigned to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington State, where she served as an air crewman. Brott met her husband while serving there and opted to leave the service in October of 1987 to raise her children. From 1987 through 1992, Brott remained involved in the United States Navy Reserve. In 1996, she chose to re-enter the military, and enlisted in the United States Army as the United States Navy was not accepting people with prior service. She attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, and was assigned to Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington as a personnel specialist.

She was then assigned to Germany, now at the rank of sergeant, and spent three years there with her family. Upon returning to the United States, she requested to be assigned to Fort Huachuca, Arizona. At that time, Brott also requested a change of Military Occupational Specialty, and went to Advanced Individual Training for Military Intelligence Systems Maintainer/Integrator. In 2007, Brott was assigned to Korea, where she commanded three U.S. soldiers and collaborated with a group of Korean soldiers to maintain an intelligence installation in the DMZ on Ganghwa Island. Brott returned from her tour in Korea in 2007 and left the United States Army due to a medical board decision in May of 2008.

Offensive Language Statement

The UNC Greensboro University Libraries collects, preserves, and makes accessible unique and historical materials for learning and research. The nature of historical materials is such that some material may represent positions, norms, and values that are offensive and objectionable. These materials represent the opinions and actions of their creators. By providing access to these records in our reading room and through our digital collections, we recognize that archives and rare books can play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and in helping us learn from the past.

Our finding aids and other collection descriptions may occasionally re-use language provided by creators or former holders of the materials, but we strive to place outdated or offensive terminology in context. That said, we recognize that we may not always make the right decision and welcome feedback from all sources so we can learn and adjust our practices. Please contact us at scua@uncg.edu if you encounter problematic language in our finding aids or other collection description. We will review the language and, as appropriate, update it in a way that balances preservation of the original context with our ongoing commitment to describing materials with respectful and inclusive language.
