Carol A. Johnson (1944-2022), of Columbus, Ohio, served in the United States Women's Army Corps from 1964 till 1968. She served in the office of the secretary of the army during the Vietnamese Tet Offensive.

This collection includes 1 May 2008 oral history transcript; program and paperwork for the Star Spangled Pageant, a touring exhibit presenting the history of women's association with the United States Army, circa 1967; copy of the Army Commendation Medal with letter, circa 1968; newspaper clipping about Star Spangled Pageant participants circa 1967; newspaper article regarding the Miss Armed Forces competition Carol participated in circa 1966; photographs of Carol during service as a WAC, circa 1966-1967.

Biographical / Historical

Carol Alban Johnson (1944-2022) of Columbus, Ohio, served in the United States Women's Army Corps from 1964 to 1968. She was stationed in the office of the secretary of the army during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam. Carol Alban Johnson was born in Columbus, Ohio on 15 November 1944. She graduated from West High School and briefly attended Ohio State University before joining the army in 1964. After completing basic training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, Johnson was sent to personnel training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, where she remained as a personnel specialist. In 1967 Johnson was selected to travel the country with an army informational team that provided staged recreations of the history of women in the military. Johnson then served as receptionist for Secretary of the Army Stanley Resor at the Pentagon. In 1968 Johnson left the military after meeting her husband. After being honorably discharged, Johnson pursued a community college education and part time employment. She died on 17 April 2022 in Reidsville, North Carolina.
