Biographical / Historical

Millie Dunn Veasey (1918-2018) was born on 31 January 1918 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She Veasey attended Washington High School in Raleigh, and after graduating, worked with the Wake County extension agent.

In December 1942, Veasey enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and took examinations at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in January 1943. She went to Fort Devers, Colorado, for basic training, and was stationed at Fort Clark, Texas, as a clerk for the cooks and bakers school until the spring of 1944. She was then transferred to Camp Maxey, Texas, where she served as a company clerk and performed secretarial duties in a hospital.

After completing overseas training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, Veasey was selected for the all African American 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion for overseas duty. They departed from Camp Shanks, New York, aboard the Queen Elizabeth ship. She served as company clerk in Birmingham, England, for four months before being transferred to Rouen, France, in summer 1945 to work as a supply clerk. She was discharged with a final rank of staff sergeant in December 1945.

After her discharge, Veasey attended Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina, on the GI Bill, earning a degree in business. After four years teaching business at Thompson High School in Mathews, Virginia, she returned to St. Augustine's to work as secretary to the president. She completed her master's degree in business education at North Carolina Central University and worked at St. Aug's until her retirement in 1988. Veasey died in Raleigh on 9 March, 2018.
