The collection includes an Olive Drab Hot Weather Field Uniform with matching Cap with Visor, circa 1969; VFW Auxiliary Dress and Matching Hat (medium blue, handmade), 1960-1967; VFW Auxiliary Dress, Jacket and Pillbox Hat (royal blue, handmade), early 1960s; "A.U.X." and "V.F.W." pins; Gavel (President's) Tie Tack; Ladies Auxiliary VFW President's Pin; Ladies Auxiliary VFW Twenty-fifth Anniversary Pin; United States Army Discharge Pin; VFW Auxiliary Pin. Additional military uniforms owned by Julia Tamer Kerr are housed in the West Point Museum at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

Biographical / Historical

Julia Tamer Kerr (1915-1996) served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1945 to 1968.

Lt. Col. Julia Tamer Kerr (1915-1996) of Pawcatuck, Connecticut, was born 17 May 1915 to Salim Sa'ad and Maryam Tamer. She graduated from Westerly High School in Westerly, R.I., in 1933 and the Mount Vernon Hospital School of Nursing in Mount Vernon, N.Y., in 1938. She also received a postgraduate degree in operating room nursing techniques from the Michael Reese Hospital Medical Center in Chicago. In 1979, Kerr obtained a bachelor's degree in history from Connecticut College.

Kerr served on active duty with the Army Nurse Corps for twenty-three years. She worked in station, field, and evacuation hospitals in West Africa and Europe during World War II. During the Korean War she was stationed in Taejon and Pusan, Korea, for eighteen months. From 1966 to 1967, she served as an operating room and emergency room supervisor in Saigon, Vietnam .

Kerr married her husband, Otto Kerr Jr., in Vietnam on April 27, 1966. After her retirement from the military, Kerr became active in veterans associations, including the 1265 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Unit in Connecticut. She was also active in various local community organizations. Kerr died on 29 October 1996.
