 Collection
Identifier: MSS 0549

Scope and Contents

The Thornburg Family Papers consist primarily of correspondence between family members and friends. In addition to letters, there are locks of hair as well as a family bible of William Thornburg and his wife, Janette Taylor Evans. The subject of the letters varies. One letter from Janette to her future husband William expresses her growing affection for him. Other correspondence highlights the challenges faced during the Civil War including assisting soldiers with supplies and medical injuries. There is one letter, not written by any family members, that describes a situation that occurred after the Battle of Asheville in April 1865. Lastly, several pieces of correspondence are shared between Dr. W. Ward Verdin and William Thornburg, which captures their long-time friendship. All of the correspondence is written in cursive English.
