Biographical / Historical

Tina K. Morrison (b. 1979), of High Point, North Carolina, served in computer automation repair in the United States Army from 2003-2006. Tina K. Morrison was born 27 December 1979 in High Point, North Carolina. She attended Fairview Elementary School and High Point Central High School, where she participated in an academically gifted program, as well as chorus and drama, and then served as student body president during her senior year. After graduation she attended The University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) but dropped out after only a year. After leaving UNCW, Morrison returned to High Point and began to consider enlisting in the United States Army.

She did eventually enlist, and was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for basic training. Morrison then attended Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where she was granted her request for a Military Occupational Specialty, or MOS, a focus on computers. Morrison's first duty station was Fort Hood, Texas. There she was put on guard duty and worked in the maintenance company, before deploying to Camp Cuervo in Baghdad, Iraq in March 2004. For the first six months Morrison worked exclusively as a tower guard. She then returned to the maintenance shop, where she was permitted to accompany other soldiers on military convoys. While in Iraq, Morrison participated in the “Adopt a U.S. Soldier” program.

After returning to the United States Morrison decided not to reenlist in the army because of concerns that she would be deployed again. She left the military in 2006. Morrison enrolled at Guilford Technical Community College and then transferred to The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and graduated in 2014.

Offensive Language Statement

The UNC Greensboro University Libraries collects, preserves, and makes accessible unique and historical materials for learning and research. The nature of historical materials is such that some material may represent positions, norms, and values that are offensive and objectionable. These materials represent the opinions and actions of their creators. By providing access to these records in our reading room and through our digital collections, we recognize that archives and rare books can play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and in helping us learn from the past.

Our finding aids and other collection descriptions may occasionally re-use language provided by creators or former holders of the materials, but we strive to place outdated or offensive terminology in context. That said, we recognize that we may not always make the right decision and welcome feedback from all sources so we can learn and adjust our practices. Please contact us at scua@uncg.edu if you encounter problematic language in our finding aids or other collection description. We will review the language and, as appropriate, update it in a way that balances preservation of the original context with our ongoing commitment to describing materials with respectful and inclusive language.
