Biographical / Historical

Susan Daugherty Walker (b.1962) served in the United States Air Force from 1982 to 1986. Susan Daugherty Walker was born 1 March, 1962 in Cumberland, Maryland, but spent the majority of her adolescence in State College, Pennsylvania. In June 1980, she graduated from State College Area High School, and then attended Pennsylvania State University for four semesters before deciding to study business at South Hills Business School.

After graduating with a business degree in 1982, Walker met with a United States Air Force recruiter. With the support of her parents, Walker enlisted in the United States Air Force and was sent to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas for basic training. While there, Walker passed the Medical Administration Specialist exam. Walker was then sent to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina, where she worked in the Medical Records department for four weeks, before being assigned as the secretary to the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the hospital squadron. Walker then worked in the Patient Affairs Office, scheduling medical appointments for military personnel.

In 1984, Walker met and married her husband and they had a son. In 1986, when she had to decide whether to reenlist or not, Walker decided to get out of military in order to care for her son. With the benefit of the training she received from the United States Air Force, Walker became a medical transcriptionist.

Offensive Language Statement

The UNC Greensboro University Libraries collects, preserves, and makes accessible unique and historical materials for learning and research. The nature of historical materials is such that some material may represent positions, norms, and values that are offensive and objectionable. These materials represent the opinions and actions of their creators. By providing access to these records in our reading room and through our digital collections, we recognize that archives and rare books can play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and in helping us learn from the past.

Our finding aids and other collection descriptions may occasionally re-use language provided by creators or former holders of the materials, but we strive to place outdated or offensive terminology in context. That said, we recognize that we may not always make the right decision and welcome feedback from all sources so we can learn and adjust our practices. Please contact us at scua@uncg.edu if you encounter problematic language in our finding aids or other collection description. We will review the language and, as appropriate, update it in a way that balances preservation of the original context with our ongoing commitment to describing materials with respectful and inclusive language.
