Biographical / Historical

Tricia Sutter (b. 1963) served in the United States Coast Guard from 1985-1989. Tricia Sutter was born in Carteret, New Jersey, grew up in Barnegat, New Jersey, and spent the majority of her adolescence in Owensboro, Kentucky.

In 1985, after attending Western Kentucky University for a year, Sutter realized that she wanted to pursue a meaningful profession and decided to join the United States Coast Guard. She completed her basic training at the United States Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, in New Jersey, and because of her background in aquatics, she was eventually asked to stay and work in the fitness center as an instructor. Sutter attended water safety instructor training in the Pocono Mountains, and upon returning to the fitness center she was responsible for the physical conditioning of the new recruits, training non-swimmers, and being a lifeguard for the pool.

After three years working in the fitness center, Sutter left to become a crewman on a small boat crew at Station Cape May. In this new role, Sutter assisted with lifesaving calls to help boats in distress, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when necessary, helped keep track of boats in the event of an emergency, and conducted searches of boats suspected of smuggling drugs. In 1989, after four years of service, Sutter left the United States Coast Guard.

Offensive Language Statement

The UNC Greensboro University Libraries collects, preserves, and makes accessible unique and historical materials for learning and research. The nature of historical materials is such that some material may represent positions, norms, and values that are offensive and objectionable. These materials represent the opinions and actions of their creators. By providing access to these records in our reading room and through our digital collections, we recognize that archives and rare books can play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and in helping us learn from the past.

Our finding aids and other collection descriptions may occasionally re-use language provided by creators or former holders of the materials, but we strive to place outdated or offensive terminology in context. That said, we recognize that we may not always make the right decision and welcome feedback from all sources so we can learn and adjust our practices. Please contact us at scua@uncg.edu if you encounter problematic language in our finding aids or other collection description. We will review the language and, as appropriate, update it in a way that balances preservation of the original context with our ongoing commitment to describing materials with respectful and inclusive language.
