Biographical / Historical
Charles "Charlie" Wiley Phillips (1898-1989) was a longtime community leader in Greensboro. Phillips, affectionately known as "Mr. Charlie," served as a teacher, high school principal, and as the Director of Public Relations at Woman's College (now UNCG) from 1935 to 1962. Three years after his retirement from UNCG, Phillips ran for the North Carolina House of Representatives and served several terms. Additionally, he was a committed member of the Greensboro Rotary Club, a supporter of Boy Scouts of America, a Sunday school teacher at the local Methodist church, and a beloved husband and father. Phillips and his wife, Lela, had four children.
This collection primarily includes extensive evidence of "Mr. Charlie's" impact in his community through a lifetime of service. The three scrapbooks in the collection are filled with letters of appreciation that were presented to him at a dinner held in his honor.
