Biographical / Historical

Jean Downer (1925-2012) of Philadelphia served in the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) from 1945 to 1946. Jean Downer was born in Philadelphia on 21 February 1925. She graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1942 and then worked at the Philadelphia Electric Company and the Supreme Milk Company.

Downer enlisted in the WAVES on her twentieth birthday and in April of 1945 was sent to Hunter College in New York for basic training. She completed hospital corps training at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland and in September 1945 was assigned to St. Albans Hospital in Long Island. In February of 1946 she was transferred to Sampson Naval Base in New York and was discharged from the WAVES in June of 1946.

Downer married Harold John Amann, a Marine she met while in the service, in July 1946. They moved to New York City where she worked as a switchboard operator until they returned to Philadelphia a year later. The couple lived in New Jersey and Buffalo, New York, and had three children together before Amann passed away in 1957. Downer met her second husband, Prescott Downer, while working at a state hospital in New York. After his death, she relocated to Southern Pines, North Carolina. She later moved to Fairfield, Connecticut where she died 15 June, 2012.

Offensive Language Statement

The UNC Greensboro University Libraries collects, preserves, and makes accessible unique and historical materials for learning and research. The nature of historical materials is such that some material may represent positions, norms, and values that are offensive and objectionable. These materials represent the opinions and actions of their creators. By providing access to these records in our reading room and through our digital collections, we recognize that archives and rare books can play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and in helping us learn from the past.

Our finding aids and other collection descriptions may occasionally re-use language provided by creators or former holders of the materials, but we strive to place outdated or offensive terminology in context. That said, we recognize that we may not always make the right decision and welcome feedback from all sources so we can learn and adjust our practices. Please contact us at scua@uncg.edu if you encounter problematic language in our finding aids or other collection description. We will review the language and, as appropriate, update it in a way that balances preservation of the original context with our ongoing commitment to describing materials with respectful and inclusive language.
