Biographical / Historical

Lunary Love (1928-2005), of Surry County, North Carolina, a career nurse, served in that capacity with the Women in the Air Force from 1952 to 1955.

Lunary Love was born in Surry County, North Carolina, to tobacco farmers. In 1947, she graduated from Trinity High School in Randolph County, North Carolina. She worked in a hosiery mill for a year before enrolling in nursing school at High Point Memorial Hospital. She completed nursing school in three years, and then worked briefly at nearby Sternberger Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina."

In 1952, Love enlisted as a nurse in the Women in the Air Force. She completed six weeks of basic training at Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama, and then was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. There she worked in the women's ward and the surgical ward of the base hospital.

In 1955 she left the service, but remained in the reserves for eight years. Love returned to Greensboro and worked at Wesley Long Community Hospital. She went on to work at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill for fifteen years. In 1970, she moved to Thomasville, North Carolina, to take care of her ailing father. While there she worked as the assistant director of nursing in a local hospital. After her father's death, Love worked at Medical Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She retired in 1990.
