Scope and Contents
Chappell discusses his background in western North Carolina, his education at Duke University and his tenure and faculty in the English department at UNCG. He describes the inception of the writing program and the establishment of the Greensboro Review. He talks about the administrations of Chancellors James S. Ferguson and William E. Moran and Vice Chancellor Mereb Mossman and names the famous authors and poets who taught at the university. He expresses his views of the university as it became a coeducational institution. Biographical Note
Fred Chappell (1936- ) began teaching at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) in 1964, retiring in 2004 as emeritus professor of English. In 1988, he was named Burlington Industries Excellence Professor of English. He is a writer of poetry, fiction and criticism and former poet laureate of North Carolina. Chappell received the O. Max Gardner Award, the highest honor the University of North Carolina system can bestow on a faculty member.
