Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Emily Manetta Asbury Yoder Papers date from 1899 to 1977 and contain correspondence and manuscripts. Many of Yoder's manuscripts appear to be works of fiction but are autobiographical in nature. In "My Childhood" she writes about being called to the office of campus president Dr. Charles McIver (1860-1906): "You called me to the office, I am Miss Asbury. 'Oh, yes,' he pleasantly said, 'I want to congratulate you on the fine report that you have made on your work here.'" Also in "My Childhood, " she writes about the emotional aspects of student life: "I remember my special chum saying in a spell of homesickness, 'If I'd have known that I'd feel this way I would have said, 'yes,' to Jim and I'd have never been here.'" Also contained in the manuscripts is an account of her courtship with husband John A. Yoder as well as minutes from a debate over whether "the North has produced greater men than the South."
