 Item — Box: 2
Identifier: MSS 0282- Series 2- Item Item 1

Scope and Contents

This journal was written by a Miss Pauline Robinson of New York City, NY in 1897. It details the second half of her travels in Europe with her family during the summer of 1897. Her family consisted of her mother and father, and her two brothers Beverly and Herman, and her baby sister Anna, whom she refers to through the journal simply as "the Baby." Pauline was fifteen when she started the trip, as she turns sixteen on August 10, in the middle of their trip.

The journal picks ups in Chamonix, France at the beginning of August and ends in New York City on September 12, with Pauline recounting their journey back across the Atlantic. The countries and places visited in this journal include Geneva, Interlaken, and Lucerne, Switerzerland; Heidelberg, Frankfort, and Cologne, Germany; Brussels Belgium; and Canterbury and London, England. In each locality, they visited several of the most noted tourist attractions of the day. Pauline details climbing mountains, riding trains through small towns, sailing on the Rhine River, visiting many famous museums, including the British Museum, seeing all the beautiful cathedrals and churches across Europe, and seeing many of the castles and palaces that were still occupied.

The diary is mostly a retelling by Pauline of what the day's events entailed, where she went, who went with her, when and where they ate, and who they met. She added souvenirs to her journal that she acquired during her trip, including menus, postcards, photographs, playbills, and ticket stubs. She also included the ship's passenger list from her return voyage to the United States.
