Scope and Contents
Travel diary of Beulah Haker Jenks Woolston of Philadelpha, Pennsylvania describing her 1913 world tour. Before leaving the US, Woolston travels through Washington, DC, New Orleans, San Antonio, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Woolston left San Franciso by ship to Hawaii then Japan. While in Japan, Woolston visited Tokyo, Kobe, Kyoto, and Nagasaki. In China, Woolston visited Tianjin, Hong Kong, and Canton. Woolston continues her travels and visits Manila (Philippines), Java, Singapore, Burma, Calcutta, Ceylon, Bombay, Cairo, Italy, England, and Paris, France.
The diary also includes descriptions of other trips. Entries include travels to Europe in 1914 and a cross country trip throughout the US.
Woolston was born on 23 June 1870 and is the daughter of William Henry Jenks and Hannah Mifflin Hacker. Woolston's family was involved in the cotton industry and descend from several old, prominent Quaker families in Philadelphia (Mifflin, Morris, Paschall, Story, and Wistar). After marrying in 1901 to Joseph Longstreth Woolston, Beulah Woolston had four children.
