Scope and Contents
This diary contains the personal experiences and observations of Mary S. Graves during her travels and contains 5 pages of notes from guidebooks on India. Mrs. Graves traveled to Hawaii, Japan, China, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sumatra, Java, Burma, India, Ceylon, Egypt, Italy, and France.
The entries provide insight of the world before World War I and ends abruptbly at the beginning of the war. One entry describes war mobilization posters in Paris, France, and another entry discusses the manager of the Astoria Hotel shot due to possession of a wireless telegraph intercepting messages.
Mary S. Graves was the widow of Dwight W. Graves, a lawyer in Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. Graves was acquainted with Burton Holmes (world famous traveler) and Melville Stone (prominent Chicago journalist).
