Scope and Contents
This is a hand written exercise lesson book from the Allen Gymnasium and College of Gymnastics in Boston, dated 1891.The book belonged to Alice J. Abbott and details three years of exercise programs. Entries give highly specific instructions for a vast variety of exercises including free movements, pulley weights, bean bags, breathing, breast bars, wooden dumbbells, iron dumbbells, marching and high parallel bars. Step by step instructions for properly executing each exercise are listed, as well as the muscles they exercise. The exercises are divided into first year, second year, and third year. The exercises increase in difficulty and complexity each year. Also included with the book are four loose-leaf sheets detailing parts of the circulatory system and describing how exercise regimens should be tailored to the individual.
