Abstract Westray Battle Boyce (1901 - 1972), of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, served as part of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corp (WAAC) and Women's Army Corp (WAC) from 1942 to 1947. She served under General Eisenhower in North Africa and is the first woman to have received the Legion of Merit medal. Three page letter typewritten dated December 13, 1941 from Honolulu signed by Ella that describes the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor. She worked at the hospital as a nurse on the base and watched the enemy planes fly "directly over the Hospital, then turn and some bombs fell about a half block from here." She then describes the scene left behind and says there is lots to do and though things do not look good on the island it is not going to get her down.
