Biographical / Historical

Louise Nash Dorsett (1913-2011) of Mt. Gilead, North Carolina, served in the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) from 1942 to 1945. Louise Nash (1913-2011) was born in Boulder, Colorado, and raised in Mt. Gilead, North Carolina, the daughter of a hydroelectric engineer and a teacher. Nash graduated from high school in Mt. Gilead and then attended Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina, for one year.

She transferred to the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) and graduated in 1934 with a degree in English. She taught school for a short time and then worked for the Carolina Power and Light Company in Raleigh, North Carolina, for six years.

Nash joined the WAVES in October 1942. She primarily performed administrative work, and she remained in Washington until her discharge in December 1945.

Louise Nash married Lieutenant Howard Dorsett on 4 January, 1943 in Staten Island, New York. The couple settled in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1946 and then moved to Mt. Gilead, North Carolina in 1947. She passed away on 11 October, 2011.
